Be our Alma Mater now and forever blessed: Hail! Hail! Brandon forever-Hail. Through rich valleys flows the Assiniboine, Where sunsets golden, prairies as golden join. Round thy fair prospects fondly our memories twine. Hail! Hail! Brandon forever-Hail. Three _ _ _ _ _ THE SICKLE '49 • DR. EVANS Four THE SICKLE '49 Dr. Evans' Message For The Sickle ~ 1949 Greetings and good wishes to the members of the Graduating Class of 1949 How quickly the time has gone since you entered Brandon College to begin your climb up the slope of so-called higher learning' Your experiences along the way no doubt have been many and varied. You have felt the pressure of work and you have enjoyed the pleasure of relaxation. You have experienced the strain of anxiety and you have felt the exhilaration of wholesome fun. On the one hand you h.ve wrestled with problems, struggled with doubts and fought against frustration and despair, and on the other hand you have experienced the satisfaction of accomplishment, the joy of friendship, the pride of attainment and the inspiration of truth. We have watched your development with pleasure and marked your progress with wholesome pride. We congratulate you on the milestone you have reached and now as you leave the somewhat protected environment of your academic pursuits to live in a world of stern reality, we want you to know that your Alma Mater has placed her confidence in you. She sincerely trusts that health and happiness may be your portion and that because of the mental development you have made under her guidance and, because of the qualities of life and character you have gained under her influence, success may attend your efforts. It is our sincere wish that while at Brandon College you have gained enough knowledge to keep you humble, enough courage to make you unafraid, enough wisdom to keep you sweet in adversity, and sympathetic in prosperity, and enough vision to enable you to steer a clear course in keeping with the principles of Truth, Honour, and Justice. Five THE SICKLE '49 From the Editors In presenting the 1948-49 edition of the Sickle, we the editors would like to thank our very competent staff. It was entirely due to their efforts that this publication ever saw the light of day. To the members of the student body we wish to extend our appreciation, not only for their contributions, but also for their prompt response to our requests for material. Such co-operation goes a long way in making the editorial work much lighter. In compiling this publication the editors and staff have tried to bear in mind that the students wish to see all phases of the year's activities recounted. We have done our best in this respect, but realize that there are unintentional omissions of which we hope you will be tolerant. We are indeed proud of having added yet another Sickle to the history of Brandon College's publications. BEVERLEE MYERS _ Honorary President President __Social Convener Class Hymn Our Alma Mater, thou doest seem To those who know thy halls, To share thy majesty serene With each who on thee calls. In future years, in life's stern way, We'll oft in memories fair, Recall the years of toil and play, And ever praise thee there. Swift years have pass'd and we have learn'd Our lessons well from thee, Thou hast inspired in every breast Hope, faith and charity. As of thee now we take our leave We pledge ourselves to bear, The standard of our loyalty o Alma Mater fair! Class Yell Crasher! dasher! with a scream! Men of mould, we're on the beam. Swinging, singing, that's the sign, We're the class of '49. Class Colors Dark Green and Gold. Eleven THE SICKLE '49 The Class of 1949 The class of '49 looks to the future with probably more hope than graduating classes have for many years. There is no depression and no war with which to cope. Canada, as a relatively young country, is able to look ahead to prosperity and expansion. We can be a part of that future greatness and can make our contribution to its construction. A sadness however, pervades this hopefulness. Within a year the members of our class will be scattered. The unity and close companionship which we, as a class, have enjoyed, will exist only in the minds of its individual members. We constitute one of the largest graduating classes which has ever left Brandon College in the last ten years. More than one-third of us are veterans. Their presence has given an air of maturity and purposefulness both to our class and to college life in general. Yet fundamental seriousness has not detracted from their contribution of humour and good will which are definite characteristics of our class. Co-operation as against faction is the key-word to student interaction this year, and much credit is due to the Senior and Lady Sticks. The program of expansion has become a reality owing to our effort in stimulating renewed interest. During our four years at Brandon College we have been active in the Student Publications, the S.C.M., the Glee Club and Athletics. We have aimed at a balance between curricular and extra-curricular and trust that the benefit to ourselves has been felt, through our leadership, in the entire student body. We leave our Alma Mater with mixed feelings: regrets at severing the associations of the past four years are coupled with hopes that our training and accomplishments will bring us success in the years to come. To Dr. Evans, to the Honorary President of our year, and to the faculty, we pay our tribute. Twelve THE SICKLE '49 STEPHEN SYl\lBALISTY LLOYD HENDERSON MARJORY FLEMING STEPHEN SYMilALISTY .....
