Ronald James McCarthy -A TributeMr. McCarthy assumed the position of Registrar at Brandon University in June, 1969. In a very short time he gained the admiration and loyalty of his staff, administration, faculty and students. Throughout his lengthy illness he remained always cheerful and looked forward to returning to his office. His untimely death in December, 1970, at a relatively young age has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be sorely missed as a loving husband and father. Mrs. A. Londry Yesterday a child came out to wander, Caught a dragon fly inside a jar; Fearful when the sky was full of thunder, And tearful at the falling of a star. President 's Message There have been a number of changes on our Campus during the past year which are directed to the goal of building an open society at Brandon University. Both the Senate and the Board of Governors have adopted the principle that their discussions should be open to the public and press unless there is some reason which the majority approve for closing the meetings. The publication "Connexion" was created this year to disseminate information and stimulate discussion. I am sure these actions will contribute to a feeling of confidence and trust between the various segments of our Campus. I hope that you, the members of the graduating class of 1971, will endeavour to work towards an open society in the larger community which many of you will enter at this time. Your generation is to be greatly commended. To a remarkable degree you value people over possessions, integrity over duty and openness over secrecy, and you use these values as the basis for decisions and actions. If you can manage to hold fast to these principles you will contribute greatly to solving the many problems which our society faces today. I hope that your experience at Brandon University has been satisfying in both intellectual and cultural terms and I extend to the class of 1971 my congratulations and best wishes for a rewarding future. A. Lloyd Dulmage, President, Brandon University. .B.U.S.U. Message As the president of the Students' Union, I have found the past year exciting and very educational. The past year has built a strong foundation upon which the next council hopefully will build. A great deal of discussion has taken place about the formation of a new national student union and the general feeling seems to be that there is no need or interest in one at this time. Brandon University Students' Union is in a potentially strong organization of western Canadian universities called Western Student Services. Although W.S.S. is not in a position, nor does it want to be, to take over the political aspects of the Canadian Union of Students, it will be able to provide the students of Brandon University with a growing number of useful services. The potential is there and when it is developed the benefits will be invaluable to all. B. U.s. U. joined W.S.S. while I was in office and it is my hope that we remain in the organization. During 1970 the Students' Union saw the election of eight students to the Senate and the appointment of one student to the board of Governors. The contributions which can be made by these representatives can radically affect student life on this campus. It is important that the student body take the responsibility of nominating and electing people to these positions who will represent them well. Over the past year the students have contributed significantly and changes have taken place. Hopefully this exchange of ideas and philosophies will help Brandon University grow in a constructive manner. I would like to thank everyone who, even in some small way, has contributed to the success of Brandon University and particularly those people who helped me complete my term of office. My wish to all those who are graduating is this - because you have now completed your studies at Brandon University, do not leave and close your mind. Continue to learn and prepare to change for this is a changing world we live in. Sir Francis Bacon once wrote, "travel in the younger sort, is a part of education': So my wish to you is that you travel and you learn and once in a while think back to the years spent at Brandon University. A. Colleen McGuinness President Brandon University Students' Union Arts Message The year that was is past, and we look back nostalgically or with relief. I write this article as one who has tried to do what he could, but cannot see success. What were the goals of the Arts Council? To further the interests of the students in arts, the constitution says. As far as I could see the students had no interests. The Arts Council had no interests. Can we still measure success, however?? Thank you Gerald Cowie for the Arts Jug and Booze Band. Thank you Maureen Hume for the Arts Book Store. Thank you Frances Finnie for doing the books under such trying conditions. Thank you B. U.S. U. for shafting us on the pub idea. Thank you fellow sticks for co-operating on council to make the voice of the faculties heard. Thank you Sickle and Quill for printing what I wanted to say to students. Thank you Mom and Dad. Thank you Mrs. J. Good Luck Everybody. Keep the faith and be yourself. Ian R. Taylor Arts President 70-71 • Education Message What the future has in store for us depends in large measure on what we place in store for the future. Some people fall into fortune; but nobody ever yet fell into success. If we expect to succeed our first goal should be to transfer the load from our heads to our back. Many of us are about to venture forth out of the vision of our friends and associates, away from the many factors which have influenced our learning. Now we are they who will teach, who will open doors, who will provide new experiences, who will broaden horizons. We are the generation of change and innovation. We can teach and we can inspire, we can instill a qiJest for knowledge, but our students can only be wise by their own experiences. Yes, our friends are saying "good-bye", but what joy and happiness will be ours when we hear our own students saying "Here he/she comes". To the students of the Faculty of Education I should like to say "Thank You" for giving me the opportunity to serve you. May you enjoy your chosen vocations and endeavour to make each day a masterpiece. Gordon Haslam Education Stick 1970-'71 Then the child moved ten times round the seasons, Skated on the tenth year frozen streams; Words like when you're older must appease you, And promises of some may make his dream. Music Message The past year in the music school was a year noticeable for its continued concord and close co-operation between faculty, administration, and students. Whereas this can be attributed to some extent to our small enrolment and to the sense of unity found in most professional faculties, I feel that the largest factor of all in this happy state of affairs has been the open-mindedness and willingness to listen on behalf of the faculty members, most noticeably the Director, Mr. Watson. This year, I feel, marks the beginning of a period of real growth for the Brandon University School of Music, not only in terms of enrolment, but also in terms of effective service to the community. The establishment of the Brandon University Concert Band and the continued excellence of the Glee Club, Chorale, and Chamber Orchestra all augur well for both the School of Music and the University as a whole. It has been an enjoyable and invigorating experience for me to serve as Music Stick for the past year. My only regret is at having to leave just when the really exciting things are starting to happen. Steve Schellenberg cience Stick Science Message Happiness is, to different people different things. I think that to me, being Science Stick over the past year has been a measure of happiness. It has been a fulfilling and rewarding kind of happiness, and an experience that I will always treasure. There were, of course, the times when I felt nothing was working right, but it seems, that as always, the bad times were wiped away by memories of the good ones. One of my big hopes, coming into office, was that in some way I would be able to renew faculty spirit; to get people once again interested in what was going on. This, I think, should be an aim of every faculty stick; spirit and interest are vital parts of university life. To my council members, and especially to my Secretary- Treasurer, Betty Conroy, I express my warmest thanks. These people along with a number of others, helped immeasurably and were great assets to the Faculty. For the future, I hope that Brandon University will continue to grow and to prosper, and that the students here will become less apathetic, and more interested. It is the students who make the university what it is; the means have been offered, they only need to be utilized. To everyone I wish a lot of joy and happiness; success and good luck; understanding and kindness. Keep your head up and eyes on the ball, that way you'll be able to win the game. Best wishes to all . Foreign Students For the first time in the history of Brandon University, a group of interested overseas students met to explore ways and means of forming an association. Late in 1970, Eileen Brownridge - General Secretary of Brandon University Alumni Association, took the initiative of calling the overseas students together and encouraged them to come together in a group. To this end, a series of meetings were held and a steering committee was nominated for the important administrative duties involved. The committee drew up a constitution for the use of the association and organized an informal coffee party at which the overseas students had the opportunity of meeting Brandon University president - Dr. A.L. Dulmage. In this meeting the overseas students expressed their views freely about the seeming insensitivity of the University Administration to the special needs of overseas students, not only in academic matters, but also in personal matters that could raise some psychological problems. In validating this insensitivity, the students pointed to the declining rate of overseas students. In reply Dr. Dulmage promised to put a proposal to the Board of Governors to seek a definite University policy on the kind and level of support the University would be able to give. He also suggested that one of the overseas students should be a member of the Senate Committee on Student Affairs. The coffee party lasted about two and a half hours and Dr. Dulmage stayed and chatted with the students through the time. At the time of writing, the steering committee is working very hard to see the Brandon University Overseas Students' Association born. NOBLE TAKEUS FOR We take a lot of things for Il'anted in this world of ours. Things that are so much a part of everyday life that we don't really think about them until they're suddenly not there. Then we realize just how important they are. GRANTED Take electricity for example. It's always there when we want it. We don't stop to think about what electricity means to us. It means a warm house in the morning, it means a comforting light on a darkened street, it means hot toast and bacon and eggs right off the griddle, it means music, entertainment and a lot less work when things have to be done. And even during those rare occasions when something stops the electricity from getting to us, to feed us and warm us, and light our way, we still take it for granted.
